Veterans Day, 2011

My brother Christopher, who served in the Navy, posted this quote on his Facebook page today. I loved it so much, I wanted to share it here and say thank you. Thank you to all military personnel, serving, retired and no longer with us, for your selfless acts & for safeguarding our freedom. We don’t thank you enough.

Those who live today remember those who do not. Those who know freedom remember today those who gave up life for freedom.

Today, in honor of the dead, we conduct ceremonies. We lay wreaths. We speak words of tribute. And in our memories, in our hearts, we hold them close to us still. Yet we also know, even as their families knew when they last looked upon them, that they can never be fully ours again, that they belong now to God and to that for which they so selflessly made a final and eternal act of devotion.

Family plaques and much more!

Last week brought some changes to Family Plaque, namely that we are no longer Family Plaque. We are now, “Family Plaques & More.”  After surviving a period where many companies went out of business, it became clear to me that Family Plaque stuck around for a few reasons:

  1. We focused on quality products
  2. We were not over-leveraged
  3. We took the time to listen to & please our customers

These three statements may seem like no-brainers to most, but you’d be surprised how far they can take a business (and how many businesses don’t incorporate them into their operating philosophies). And as we move forward, we are still focused on these guidelines, #2 in particular.  The “More” I’m talking about in our new name will be an expansion of our quality offerings – which our customers have asked for - but all in time. We are not going to buy a lot of inventory and add it to the website all at once, but rather, we’ll research new products, see what our customers think, and then add them slowly, in limited quantities, and monitor their performance over time.

We could use your help during this, “More” phase.  Join us on Facebook, where we add photographs of potential products & ask for feedback.  You can also subscribe to our Newsletter and get quarterly updates about what we’re working on, customer specials we’re offering, and…well…more!

I’m not big on change, but this is a change I’m excited about & that I owe a large amount of thanks for. To all of Family Plaque’s customers, new & old, thank you. You are the reason we have stayed in business & are able to expand our business today. We’re excited to have you join us as we move forward. So… goodbye Family Plaque, hello Family Plaques & More!

Denver 311 Service

I recently sent an email to the City and County of Denver’s 311 service complaining about a crosswalk near my home.  Although this location has two over sized stop signs, drivers rarely stop.  The last straw for me was when The Boss and I were crossing within the crosswalk and a driver didn’t stop and drove around us…AROUND US! (The Boss learned a few new words that day, as said driver got stuck in traffic about eight feet away and I got to scream at this a-hole for a minute) The next day,  I wrote to 311 and requested they do something.  And guess what? They did.

When I finished writing my initial email and hit “Send”, I was sure it was going out into the void, never to be responded to, let alone read.  I was so wrong.  Within an hour, I received an email telling me a case number had been assigned to my complaint and then, a few days later, another one telling me my case had been sent to the appropriate department.  Within a week, a Senior Engineering Associate with Denver Public Works emailed me telling me they were going to install a “stop bar” at the location.  Then, this morning, low and behold, there were workers at the location painting the stop bar (see below) – all within three weeks of my initial complaint.  How’s that for service?

The Boss and I sincerely thank everyone at the City and County of Denver and K.C. at Public Works, Traffic Engineering Services!  All of you have made our part of the world a little safer.

The Best Little Pumpkin Patch in Colorado

If you live in or around the Denver area, I want to tell you about the best “pumpkin patch” in town: Nick’s Garden Center.   Nick’s is currently having its 2009 Fall Festival.  My mother-in-law and I took The Boss to the Festival over the weekend and there was so much to do and see for kids.  It had pumpkins galore, jumping castles, hayrides, a straw maze, fresh popped popcorn, and much, much more.  We  had a ball while we were there and plan to go back very soon for more pumpkins, fresh roasted Hatch chilies, and garden-fresh produce.  Admission is free and most rides only cost $1.00.  So get out to Nick’s Garden Center’s 2009 Fall Festival while it lasts!  See below for Nick’s address, directions, and special coupons!
